as we sit in reflection on this unique year (I invite you all to share many many photos in the process!), there's so much gratitude & contentment we can choose to feel, instead of bitterness.

because you've overcome the darkness and fought to manifest adventure and joy in your own small ways. you're doing the work. every day, even the mundane, is an act of celebration. I'm proud of us all.

Repost from @highdesertclimbers

This weekend Shawn Snyder, a man previously banned from Smith Rock, decided to install a handmade, unsafe ladder made of rebar going straight up the Picnic Lunch Wall right off the foot of the Misery Ridge Trail against the recommendation and ethics of the climbing community.

He stated that he will continue to take such action unless a bolting ban is put in place, damaging public resources to further his agenda. His actions aim to show division in the climbing community with a stated purpose of "stir(ring) the pot" so much so that it's too miserable for the land managers to deal with the drama and decide it's easier to shut our sports down.

In a comment on MP he states, “Good hardware is really expensive and I definitely am not giving up my coffee so basic rebar will have to do.” He intends to continue installing these dangerous ladders throughout the park saying, “I really like these they go up pretty quick. Should have several in by the end of this year.”

We cannot let this happen. We cannot let one angry man’s agenda ruin the climbing community’s relationship with park management. We cannot endanger the public allowing these dangerous ladders to proliferate the walls of Smith. We must act to stop Shawn from installing dangerous, handmade rebar ladders throughout the park. And we have to do so tonight.

If you are outraged by Shawn's actions, whether you are a Smith Rock local or not, we need you to write an email to the park manager Matt Davey  Matthew.Davey@oregon.gov. They need documentation to take action. Explain how if you feel threatened by his behavior. These emails need to be in by tomorrow morning.

Community and flow in climbing bring so much joy! Community and flow in climbing bring so much joy! @robylindsey shares the experience of her first multi-pitch climb:

Breath. Flow. Earth. Repeat.

This past week, I climbed my first (baby) multi-pitch with the help of @packamilli & moral support of @figtreephotography and @0barteaux ! Pretty cool!

Climbing is a mental game for me. I never set out to be the best/strongest, or move thru grades, or climb the highest thing. I‘ve just been following my feet, letting go of my head (trying), & living in the present moment as best I can.
.
There’s a feeling that happens when moving thru your own bullshit & fear. All of the sudden, the mental chatter quiets. It’s just you, in the Silence of the moment, guided by the rhythm of your breath & the cadence of your movement flowing against the wrinkles of the Earth.
.
Breath. Flow. Earth. Repeat.
.
This formula creates magic, no matter the form it manifests.

& the yogis chant:
“Pavan Guru, panee pita
Maataa dharat mahat.”

Divine Breath (the wind from beyond the beyond which carries the life force that sustains us) is the teacher.
Water (flow), the Father.
& Earth, the great Mother of all.

Breath.
Flow.
Earth.

Repeat.

Some people chant.
Some people run/surf/ski/swim.
Some people create.
Some people climb.
& some do their own thing and/or all of the above.

It’s all the same.

Grateful for these experiences & community.

Well that was pretty fun. Promontory climbing and the coast for my Oregon send off.

I am unbelievably grateful for my time here in Ashland, my communities, my work, and my sense of home. I’m off to work for World Class Climbing Academy for the year and I feel honored for the position, stoked to work with incredibly talented athletes and colleagues and ready to be back at my passion.

Here’s to every single mentor and champion these last few years for building me up, calling me in, and pushing me past my limits. You know who you are and I owe you for all the kindness you’ve show me. I am hopeful to pay it forward.

Climbing considerations as OR counties open up

May 18, 2020 By admin Leave a Comment

Consider being monogamous in your climbing partnerships. Climb exclusively with your housemates if possible. Otherwise, find someone with similar schedules and goals to climb with. The less people you climb with, the less germs you spread.  Try to stay within 50 miles. Avoid stops at your destination; gas up & snack up in your local […]
