2026 Terra Nova Raptor Closure Recommendation

2026 Terra Nova Raptor Closure Recommendation

Raptors commonly nest at Terra Nova between March and June each year. Southwest Oregon Climber’s Coalition will be monitoring territorial response during the 2026 nesting season. You can help us by following the recommendations posted below and submitting a monitoring form.

Date Updated: 5/21/2026

Current Peregrine nest status: Incubation and Brooding

Status details: The Peregrine Falcon nest has been located and is not within the climbing area at Terra Nova.

Current Recommended Closure: Because the nest is located beyond the climbing area, we do not expect the Peregrine Falcons to react to climber activity within the crag. No closures are recommended at this time.

Current DO NOT CLIMB Recommendations:

  • None

PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION FOR RAPTOR RESPONSE ON:

  • None

STOP ACTIVITY OR RELOCATE IF:

  • A large bird dives towards you
  • A large bird flies in circles above or near you
  • A large bird makes loud sounds continuously while looking at you

Next update expected by: 6/30/2026

Additional Comments: SWOCC will continue to monitor the nest to confirm fledging of young. Though the peregrines are not nesting in the climbing area, this area is likely still used by the pair for hunting and other behaviors. Please continue to monitor bird activity while using the area, and fill out the climber survey form when visiting the crag. Survey responses can help demonstrate if the birds are less active in the crag in years when they choose to nest in this alternative location. This data can be useful for protecting long-term climbing access. Thanks to everyone for helping out!
